“So like… you have actual –bees- at your house??”, is usually the response I get when I tell people I am a beekeeper. I feel like they picture me walking around the house in my bee suit all day while swarms of bees circle my head and follow me around.
But ya… I gots bees.
Basically one day Gaston comes up to me and says, “I used to take care of bees when I was younger. It was my first job actually”. Then… “Can we get some bees?”
He’s talking about them like you can just go down to the corner store, ask for some bees, put them in a box, and take them home.
Funnily enough, it’s actually quite close to that. One morning, he very excitedly came home with our first two colonies – literally two hive boxes, with ratchet straps to keep them contained, in the backseat of his car. We set them atop a cinder block formation to keep them off the ground and suddenly… we were beekeepers!
Everybody loves the bees. Sometimes it start with funny looks, but eventually they get sucked in and want to know more. Bees are truly awesome.
We started a blog to keep a record of our sweet adventure and to educate and entertain along the way. It makes for some great stories and people always want to know more.
