Trauma on the open road

Original post date: November 20, 2008

Unfortunately not everything about my job is fun and light-hearted.  Every once in a while, life happens.

We were on our way from Belize City to San Ignacio on the scenic Humming Bird Highway, most of us dozing on a lazy sunny day.

All of a sudden, I hear a smash sound and look up to see a blue pick up truck cross right in front of the bus, onto the gravel to the right of the bus, and roll over 3 times before smashing into a bus shelter.

I felt as if I had just watched a scene out of a movie.  The kind where you cringe at the destruction and can only say `oooh, that can’t be good…` Then it was like nothing happened.  Nobody said anything and the bus driver kept going.

It wasn´t until some lady shot up out of her seat and started screaming that we all snapped out of shock.

People started screaming at the bus driver to stop the bus.  We backed up and joined the other herd of vehicles whose passengers were already out examining the carnage and trying to help.

The pick up truck was a crumpled mass of metal and shattered glass.  It had tried to take over the bus, but had not left enough room for its cab before it tried to pull in ahead of the bus.  It´s right rear bumper caught the left front bumper of the bus and sent it into a tail spin across the front of the bus.  For your reference – some things are just worth being late for.

Thankfully both passengers survived and the bus shelter (now a crumpled tin roof) had been empty.

Life is an adventure my friends – treasure every moment
